West Side Story

For those of you who are as big as fans as I am of musicals, you'll probably recognize this as the dance sequence between Maria and Tony from West Side Story. Something I completed over a month ago.
I finally have my scanner back- which I packed away in storage when I moved back home around May-ish. Now back in New York, happily settled into my apartment with my snobby cat. Couldn't be happier. Hopefully I'll be posting more often.

p.s. changed the layout to a nice eye-shattering blue with a brand new spanking disgusting banner. Enjoy?

Storyworks

I couldn't be happier that is finally finished. The assignment was to make a cover and 2 spot illustrations for the Storyworks magazine.


Been producing a lot...I think. As soon as the semester is over next week, I'll be uploading a lot of stuff...hopefully.

The Metamorphosis

11''x17'' Illustration based on the novella written by Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis. Read more about it here.

While this painting had literary been eating me away making me stay up one too many nights without a minute's sleep, drink bottom-less cups of coffee, and keep me sipping on five-hour energy I'm pretty much happy with this piece. Well, actually the hands aren't completed yet but I will be working on them later...as of now, I have one painting I need to complete, and another one I need to get started on! Work work work!
Everything is acrylic, except for the notes which were drawn with ink. This actually started out as a gouache piece but I was getting frustrated with that virtuous medium! So I went ahead and painted in acrylic right over the gouache...I really did spend a lot of time on this painting as simple as it looks.
Also, I might be changing the cockroach's legs to be two pairs of human legs, and a pair of human arms. Input please? I'd like some advice plus some ripping critiques please!

It's been a while...

Sorry folks. But here is something I completed some few weeks ago-


My Twilight Zone painting! Starring Rod Serling getting sucked into a doll-mannequin-thing by a black and white spirally-thing.
It's a pop-out, so here are some different views and of course a little close up of details and all that jazz.

In the meantime, I am almost done completing a different painting, and I have a lot of work on to do on another...plus an ink-life drawing that I haven't even started yet. Oh yes, and I have more thumbnails to do. And Indesign. And some english work. All due this week! Guess who's not getting any sleep this week?
Nah I never sleep. At night I mean. But I always get my work done in the most decent-way possible in the little time I'm given. I love my work-alcoholic life as of now.

Also, more news:
This Thursday April 22nd from 6-9 PM, there will be an illustration exhibition showing at the Illustration House located on 110 West 25th street. Please come if you can; it's a student gallery showing the majority of my fellow illustration-classmates work, as well as mine. Your eyes will bleed and pop our of your head from the amazing and talented young people of our generation that has yet to be discovered! So come. It's free, and it's candy to your eyes and food for your brain. Nothing to lose, only to gain.

The gallery will be up from the 20th to the 30th, but you'll be able to meet all the students who produced the artwork if you come Thursday. So I'll say it again; GO TO THE EXHIBITION! Here I will once again link the website for this marvelous event: http://illustrationfuturo.blogspot.com/

Finally finished this assignment for general illustration. The right side was cut off a bit by the scanner though...
We had to take a boring article which someone wrote about teenagers. "Oh no! 13 and 14 year olds are doing drugs, alcohol, having sex and smoking cigarettes! Oh those poor corrupted souls...this is what we should do to keep our children healthy and pure..." etc. etc. You know the deal.
So us, illustrators, make an interesting image about the teenage brain so people could look at it and think "Hey! That's a cool picture, now I just gotta read this article!"

Well, anyhow I'm glad this is done. My next assignment is to make an illustration based on a story about a guy who wakes up one morning to find out he turned into a human-sized cockroach.
Also I seem to have a new approach to this semester. I'm actually putting a lot of effort and care into my work. Compared to the last few semesters I feel like the majority of my work has been half-assed and quickly done.

Of course now that all I'm really doing is working, I don't feel like a rebellious teenage college student anymore, but more so like a middle-aged woman doing her job. Oh dear, I feel so old.

My weekend

Consisted of going to China Town on Valentines day/Chinese New Year and playing photographer, and doing two more small paintings that I've yet to deliver to some friends.


Woop.

China town was crazy crowed (as it usually is) but it was much more terrible with it being Chinese new year and all. Imagine opening up a pack of sardines. Then imagine you being in those pack of sardines. Then imagine if you were stuck in those pack of sardines, except everyone in china town is a sardine and you have no way out because there are just too many of those terribly smelling fish in your way, and it's much too crowed to even move an inch.

That, my friends, is China town.

More paint.

Yes, more paintings. I did these over winter break on a whim of watching cartoons and drinking bottom-less cups of coffee through out the night.

They're all late-holiday gifts for my friends. I still have more things I want to paint for people. But for the meantime...enjoy.

Very retro-like and flat colors. Simple, but that's how I see this friend. She really does own heart-shaped sunglasses, and looks hot on her.
(that silver thing on her nostril is a nose ring...it might be hard to read.)

This is probably my favorite painting. Though I'm not going to lie, I was kind of lazy with the stripes.

And well...I'm not too fond of this painting. This would be an example of my terrible concept of color, and not knowing which color goes better with the other. But my friend liked it, so that's all that matters.

Well, comparing a painting from first semester to now, I think I've improved a lot.

Exhibit A: first semester, acrylic. A black and white self-portrait. I honest-to-god had no clue how that stuff worked.



Exhibit B: thrid semester, acrylic. A color painting of an animal. This cat gave me nightmares.



Exhibit C: third semester, acrylic. A color painting of whatever we wanted to paint. I painted a very very sad little man.
Ta-daaaaaaaaaaah!

The scans are terrible. Especially on the last one. Damn those demons of reflection!
